Case Study: Tanks Provide Large Capacity Solution in Microelectronics CMP Applications

The Challenge

Saint-Gobain is dedicated to collaborating with our customers to solve equipment and process challenges while delivering efficient, effective solutions. One notable customer in Asia was searching for an alternative tank solution to replace their existing tanks, which were limited in size. They required tanks with a capacity of over 100 gallons, that were black spot free, chemically resistant and inert for use with the shared slurries in the microelectronics Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) process. The project also demanded a short lead time and multiple lightweight tanks.

In addition to meeting technical specifications, logistics played a critical role. Given the large size of the tanks, specialized packaging methods were necessary to minimize the risk of deformation during overseas transportation.

Saint-Gobain’s Asia Team reviewed our customer’s various requirements and developed a plan to solve their challenge. Our Furon Conical Tanks are

created with specified raw materials in a rotation molding process, were identified as an ideal fit for their application. Not only would the tanks meet the customer’s specific requirements, but they are also engineered with a robust, corner-free design preventing thinning and minimizing slurry agglomeration, which can negatively impact a tank’s efficiency and lifetime. With a wide range of product capacities – from 30 to 500 gallons – providing the exact size tank (150 gallons) the customer required was simple.

Leveraging our manufacturing capabilities in Asia enabled us to meet the crucial five-week delivery deadline. Given the volume and size of the products, we explored sea freight as a cost-effective shipping option. To minimize the risk of deformation or damage during transit, we utilized custom recyclable packaging, precisely sized to allow the 150-gallon tanks to be securely placed on pallets for efficient transport.
